Leakage flux is defined as the magnetic flux which does not follow the particularly intended path in a magnetic circuit. The total flux in the magnetic circuit is given by, ϕ a = ϕ g + ϕ l.

What causes leakage flux?

The main flux which links with both the winding is useful flux or mutual flux. However, primary current would produce some flux which would not link with the secondary winding. Similarly, secondary current would produce some flux which would not link with the primary winding. Such fluxes are called as leakage flux.

In a transformer, the mutual flux i.e. the flux that links both primary coil and secondary coil, is a little less than 100%.
