Thread Dimensions

Thread dimensions
How are thread sizes measured?
Thread sizes are determined by two main elements: the thread diameter (i.e., the distance between a thread's crests) and the thread per inch (i.e., numbers of threads per inch) or pitch (i.e., the distance between one thread's crest and another).
What is M10 thread size?
Thread Size | Nominal Diameter (mm) | Effective Diameter (mm) |
---|---|---|
M8 | 8.0 | 7.188 |
M10 | 10.0 | 9.026 |
M12 | 12.0 | 10.863 |
M14 | 14.0 | 12.701 |
What is the diameter of a thread?
The major diameter of a thread is the diameter of the imaginary co-axial cylinder that just touches the crest of an external thread or the root of an internal thread. The minor diameter is the diameter of an imaginary cylinder that just touches the roots of an external thread and (or) the crests of an internal thread.
What is nominal thread diameter?
The size most commonly associated with screw threads is the nominal diameter. Nominal diameter is a more of a label than a size. For example, a bolt and nut may be described as being ½” diameter. But neither the external threads of the bolt nor the internal threads of the nut are exactly .
What size is a 1/4 thread?
As a general “rule of thumb” an NPT thread is approximately 1/4" (0.25”) larger than its “name.” For a 1/4" NPT fitting the “nominal” OD is 0.533”. NPT fittings are slightly tapered so the “nominal” diameter is the diameter in the middle of the threaded portion, as measured by the top (crest) of the threads.
What are the 3 basic types of threads?
There are three standard thread series in the Unified screw thread system that are highly important for fasteners: UNC (coarse), UNF (fine), and 8-UN (8 thread).
What does 10-24 thread size mean?
Imperial measurement fasteners are classified by threads per inch, so a 1/4-20 bolt has 20 threads per inch (TPI), while a 10-24 screw has 24 threads per inch. You can determine the threads per inch of a metric fastener by multiplying the millimeters by 0.03937, and then dividing 1 by that number.
How is NPT size measured?
To determine the NPT size, with a caliper, measure the diameter of the 2nd or 3rd thread on your pipe, fitting or valve as shown below. Find the caliper measurement in the chart and cross reference the nominal NPT pipe size. Don't get confused, the actual measurement is not the same as the NPT pipe size.
What does M5 mean?
Bolts and nuts described as M5 means they are bolts or nuts with threaded 5 mm bodies. Additional numbers in the description indicate thread pitch and length. The M series metric fasteners have standardized pitches and diameters and head wrench sizes.
What size thread is M5?
M5 screw size The M5 screw has a diameter of 5mm.
What does M8 mean?
m8 (plural m8s or m8's) (Internet slang, text messaging) Abbreviation of mate.
Is thread size the major diameter?
Major Diameter: The largest diameter of the thread of the screw or nut. The term “major diameter” replaces the term “outside diameter” as applied to the thread of a screw and also the term “full diameter” as applied to the thread of a nut. Minor Diameter: The smallest diameter of the thread of the screw or nut.
What size is 4 40 thread?
Thread | 4-40 |
---|---|
Thread Length (E) | 0.156'' |
What is standard metric thread?
Standard metric screw threads are designated by pitch in millimeters (mm). This is the distance measured between the peaks of two adjacent threads. ASTM fastener standards measure threads by TPI: threads per inch.
What is G and H in thread?
"G" designates Ground Thread. "H" designates the pitch diameter is on high side of basic. These two letters (GH) are followed by a numeral indicating the Tolerance of Pitch diameter oversize.
What is #4 thread size?
Major Diameter (in) | Threads per inch (tpi) | Pitch (mm) |
---|---|---|
#3 - 48 | 48 | 0.529 |
#4 - 40 | 40 | 0.635 |
#5 - 40 | 40 | 0.635 |
What is #8 thread size?
Basic Dimensions for Coarse Thread Series Parts (UNC/UNRC) | ||
---|---|---|
(measured in inches) | ||
#5 | 0.125 | 40 |
#6 | 0.138 | 32 |
#8 | 0.164 | 32 |
What size is a 3/8 thread?
Coarse Thread Series – UNC | Fine Thread Series – UNF | |
---|---|---|
Nominal Size and Threads Per In. | Basic Pitch Dia. | Nominal Size and Threads Per In. |
3⁄8 – 16 | 0.3344 | 3⁄8 – 24 |

1⁄2 – 13 | 0.45 | 1⁄2 – 20 |
What does 1/8 NPT stand for?
NPT stands for National Pipe Tapered threads, also known as ANSI/ASME B1. 20.1 pipe threads. It is a U.S. standard for measuring tapered threads on threaded pipes and fittings.
